“Der neutestamentliche Gebrauch des Wortes reformare ist offensichtlich christologisch-pneumatologisch und damit auch eschatologisch, also heilsgeschichtlich gepräg. Dieser Sprachgebrauch hat sich offenbar in der liturgischen Sprache des Abendlandes und bei lateinischen Kirchenvätern erhalten. Bezeichnend ist z.B. die Formulierung Augustins in seiner Auslegung von Psalm 32 (33), 11. Er kommt dort auf das Bild Gottes im Geiste des Menschen zu sprechen. Durch die Hinneigung zur Sünde ist dieses Bild verfärbt, entstellt worden. Aber nun ist eben der zu diesem entstellten Bilde als reformator gekommen, der zuvor sein formator gewesen ist: ‘Denn durch das Wort ist das All geschaffen und durch das Wort wurde dieses Bilde eingeprägt. Gekommen ist eben dieses Wort, auf daß wir vom Apostel hören: Reformamini in novitate mentis vestrae (ML 36,294).’ Der Gebrauch des theologisches Begriffes reformatio ist also durch die Schöpfung, Sünde, Inkarnation und Neuschöpfung bestimmt. Reformatio ist in der alten Kirche wie im neuen Testament offenbar ein heilsgeschichtlicher, soteriologischer Begriff.”
